Energy is such a fickle thing, wouldn’t you agree? In any given moment, our energy can be high and then plummet depending on who we encounter, the general mood of the day, or even the situation we are in. Why do we allow ourselves to succumb to the ebbs and flows? Simple. Our inner monologue dictates how the cells in our body respond. We sacrifice sleep and then wonder why we don’t have the energy to get through the day. We question why we are sick so often and why we’re suddenly gaining weight. So, how can we control it?

Sleep is the number one under-valued and least prioritized piece of our health. We’ve all seen the statistics of those who don’t get enough rest. Higher levels of cortisol which lead to weight gain. Higher stress levels that lead to heart attacks, immune compromise, and even cancer. I have struggled with this more than I care to admit. Sleep is the one sacrifice I am willing to make to have more time to myself. Can you relate?

When I reflect on the early years of my marriage, pre-kids, I was capable of getting 8-10 hours of sleep every night. Once children arrived, that became a constant source of struggle. Feedings, rocking, and co-sleeping are obvious reasons why moms and dads lose sleep. On the other hand, I found myself staying up later and waking earlier just to have time alone. I craved quiet mornings with coffee and my devotions and evenings with Netflix and snack. The truth is, I was exhausted and eating when what my body really wanted was sleep. The food kept me awake to have time alone.

This past year I have been working on a certification to become a health coach. Not long after beginning, we learned the value of sleep. I can’t very well tell others to sleep 7-9 hours if I’m not willing to do the same. Here is what happened. I started taking 1 Serenity Softgel and 1 Copaiba soft gel each night around an hour before bed. I filled every diffuser in the house with calming oils: Serenity, Cedarwood, Vetiver, Lavender, Balance, Juniper Berry, Copaiba, Marjoram or any combination of those. Rather than falling asleep on the couch and waking to go to bed, I fell asleep in the twins room and then went straight to the kitchen to take me evening supplements and then went to bed. No phone. No light. Just prayer.

The outcome of this? I was sleeping 8-9 hours and waking with joy. Yes. I had a smile on my face, didn’t mind when the kids woke up 5 minutes after I did, and began to notice the scales were even moving south. Seriously. Sleep. Reduce stress, create an evening routine, and remember that our bodies need to be prepared for sleep. What do we do for our kids to relax? Warm bath, pajamas, lotion and oils, read a book, and lie quietly in bed. Why don’t we do the same for ourselves? Give it a try. Let me know how it goes. 1 week. Give it one full week and commit.
